Common Causes of Fires in the Home

Please be careful. The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) reports that fires move quickly, but most home fires are preventable.

Causes include:

Low attention to cooking

It doesn’t take much time for cooking to get out of control. Grease buildup on the stove or in the oven can catch fire when you’re preheating the oven. Don’t let grease build up and keep flammable object away from hot areas. If the stove is hot enough, there doesn’t need to be a flame to cause fire.

Electrical malfunctions

Don’t overload outlets or power strips. Do not ever use equipment that has stripped or frayed wiring. Fires can start inside the walls. Smoke detectors won’t prevent a fire, but they do give everyone a chance to get out of the house.

Smoking

Okay, people, be reasonable. The Surgeon General’s report came out in 1964. It’s not a surprise that smoking is bad for your health, the health of other people and of pets, and the health of the environment. It shouldn’t be a surprise that it is a major cause of accidental fires. Don’t smoke. Just don’t.

Candles

Ah, beautiful candlelight. We all know children and pets can move at warp speed when trouble is on their minds, so be alert. Don’t fall asleep until you have put out the candles. Keep the candles away from flammable objects.
